A blackened-timber long house set alone on a snowfield above St. Moritz, glazed to the south and silent in every other direction.
Kessel House sits alone on a south-facing shelf above St. Moritz, reached by a private road that is cleared before dawn every winter morning. Its long, blackened-timber body was drawn to disappear against the forest edge; only the glazing gives it away after dark.
Inside, the plan is a single sequence of rooms held beneath one roof — kitchen, library, living and sleeping quarters — each framing a different peak. The house is heated by a ground-source system and a pair of open hearths, and has been lived in, season after season, by its architect’s family since completion.
